History

1996 Irene Smith-King attends a presentation about Gallery 37, the award winning, arts based, youth employment project launched in 1991 by Maggie Daley in Chicago, IL.

1998 A delegation from Gary travel to Chicago to participate in extensive training to learn how to replicate the program in other communities.

1999 A committee works on the components needed to launch  a community based organization dedicated to education, arts and cultural access and economic opportunity through the arts.

2000 Gary Art Works is incorporated as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. 

2001 Gary Art Works launches its first program, a summer apprenticeship in the arts for youth. After-school programming, a variety of classes and special events follow quickly.
